Our environment is more than just our surroundings Environment encompasses: - the biogeochemical-physical system in which people and other organisms exist. - the dynamic interrelationships among organisms (including people) and their surroundings – physical, chemical, biological, geological, social/cultural. Environmental science explores interactions between humans and the physical and biological world.

Why interdisciplinarity? Environmental issues are inherently multidisciplinary. The interdisciplinary contribution to our understanding is much greater than the sum of the parts. Recall two of our course goals: - understand the roles of various disciplines in contributing to knowledge about the environment - appreciate the difference between disciplinary and interdisciplinary studies
