Experiment 1: Diels- Alder Reaction of Maleic Anhydride and Furan Abstract: The purpose of this experiment is to take Maleic Anhydride and Furan to make a cyclohexane ring. From our reaction we ended with .951 grams of crystals. However, there is a way to make two different products, which are endo-adduct and exo-adduct. The product that we obtained in lab was the exo- adduct, this was identified by a melting point of 111 ° C. Introduction: In the experiment Diels-Alder is prepared by Diels- Alder adduct of furan and maleic anhydride. These two compounds from a bicyclic adduct, which can have an endo- or exo- stereochemistry. The isomer that you obtain depends on how the reaction is controlled. If the product is under kinetic control, the product that is formed faster is favored, in that case the endo-adduct. When the reaction is thermodynamically controlled, the more stable product is favored, thus making an exo-adduct product. Reaction:
