Exam 1 Outline Chemistry 211 Tillman Fall 2010 Atomic Structure and Bonding Know: atomic and mass numbers, orbitials (s and p), filling atomic orbitals, valence electrons, the octet rule, and bonds. Be able to specify the hybridization of all atoms in a molecule. Also know ideal bond angles, the shapes of molecules, and both electronic and molecular geometry around atoms. Know sigma and pi bonds. Be able to distinguish between covalent and ionic bonding. Know polar covalent and non-polar covalent bonds (remember about electronegativity values of atoms?). Be able to show the direction of polarization in a polar bond and also the overall dipole moment in molecules using arrows correctly. Be able to assign formal charges for atoms in molecules. Resonance Be able to draw resonance structures for anions (- charges), cations (+ charges), and radicals. Use proper arrows to show electron movement, and separate structures by double headed arrows.
