Unformatted text preview: 1 Municipal and Industrial Wastewater Treatment CIVL3007-2010 Dr. Zhang T 2 Classification of Wastewater Treatment Processes • according to treatment principle applied: physical/mechanical chemical, physico-chemical biological • according to sequence in process flow scheme: (pre-treatment, esp. for industries) primary (physical, screening, grit chamber and primary sedimentation) secondary (biological) tertiary (advanced, varied depending on the target pollutants) 3 Physical Processes ¡ Screen : coarse solids, using screening. ¡ Filtration : fine particles, using sand or soil filter ¡ Membranes separation : fine particles and dissolved chemicals, using membrane ¡ Sedimentation : gravity settling, settlement tank, downward to the bottom, for example, sand. ¡ Flotation : small gas bubbles, flotation tank, upward to the top, for example, oil/greese.
