Chapter 9 Discussion Questions 1. What is e-commerce? List and describe the unique features of e-commerce. E-commerce refers to the use of the Internet and the Web to transact business. More formally, e-commerce is about digitally enabled commercial transactions between and among organizations and individuals. For the most part, this means transactions that occur over the Internet and the Web. Commercial transactions involve the exchange of value across organizational or individual boundaries in return for products and services. There are eight unique features of e-commerce technology which are the following: Ubiquity – internet/web technology is available everywhere; at work, at home, and elsewhere via mobile devices. Global Reach – the technology reaches across national boundaries, around the earth. Universal Standards – There is one set of technology standards, namely Internet standards. Richness – the complexity and content of a message, such as video, audio, and text messages. Interactivity – the technology works through interaction with the user. Information Density
