1 Compare and contrast 2 theories: -everything has a function, crime poverty, laws, police, government. Everything can be explained in terms of its purpose and how it fits into society. Everything comes together to make the structure. Basically that we all work together for the common good. Where as for the conflict theory Karl Marx sees everything in terms of an upper class and lower class. The bourgeoisie and the proletariat. Where the upperclass owns the means of production and hires the lower class to work in their factories. The upper class has all the power and does whatever they can to keep lower class down. He says eventually once the lower class has what’s called class consciousness they will revolt and over take the government which the upper class controls. Discusses inequality and social unhappiness. What are major assumptions of social behavior and social organization for conflict theory -the major assumptions of social behavior for the conflict theory is that the upper class behaves in a way to keep their high status and keep the lower status people down where they are. The upper class benefits from being at top and staying there. The lower class seeks to change the status quo and behaves in a subordinate manner. What are major assumptions of social behavior and social organization for structural functionalist theory: -the major assumptions of behavior for structural functionalist theory is that everyone does what they have to do. Everyone has their role in society and they do it or else the whole society can not function. Organizations are set up to help the foundation of structures in society. Are they opposed to each other -yes they are opposed to each other because one shows subordination and domination of a whole class where as the other shows everyone as altruistic that we have an equal society and that we are all happy where we are at, doing our own thing for the bigger picture. Which is more satisfactory? I believe the structural functionalism is more satisfactory becaue no one like to be subjugated and put down socially ,financially and emotionally. With structural everyone accepts their position and is satisfied. The conflict theory causes dissention and unrest. 2. We spent a few days discussing why emotions are sociologically relevant. To answer this question, you must first explain (exhaustively) why emotions are structured. Then, explain what Hochschild meant by emotion work. What is not biological is our ability to mix the four primary elements (fear, anger, sadness, happiness), into a different type of emotion (e.g. awe—surprise, shock, fear, and happiness).

EXCHANGE--Emotions are resources that can be exchanged between people and you can purchase them in a sense (e.g. sex and xanax). Emotions are generated in social interactions, but we are rarely aware of them. When we experience real positive or negative emotions is when we realize them, otherwise we don’t. HOARDED—The emotional resources can be hoarded, which means not everyone is
