Chinese Seamstress: Themes Individuality “A woman’s beauty is a treasure beyond price” - The Chinese Seamstress uses this quote to follow her dreams which came from the bourgeois books. They give her confidence to do something with her life and she becomes an individual The ending of the story is ambiguous because some people would way that she has understood the book though others would say she didn’t: - She understood the books because she became an individual - She didn’t understand the books because she took the one quote literally instead of the whole book. Balzac said how hypocritical and shallow the people of the city are because they only think about their beauty, but the little seamstress is appealed by the city “Without him I would never have understood the splendor of taking free and independent action as an individual” - Books transformed people and made them doubt the cultural revolution and they were becoming more independent
