3/30/2010 1 Child & Adolescent Development PSY 203 T Spring 2010 Dr. Christine Hughes University of Miami Happy & Healthy Middle childhood is generally a healthy time of life A time when, around the world, children are assigned more responsibilities Growth Not as spectacular as in early years Most children gain 5- 7 lbs. and 2˝ per year Gender differences Growth Slow and steady much individual variation Often, gain “growing” weight during this time lower portion of the body grows faster bones and ligaments Worldwide Variation Individual Differences: 9-inch gap between the tallest and shortest 8 year olds across the globe Shortest tend to be from South America, Asia, Pacific Islands Tallest tend to live in US, Canada, or Australia BUT are of Czech, Dutch, Latvian, Norwegian, Swiss and African- American descent Why? Nutrition Children receiving more nutrients tend to have more energy and feel more self- confident .
