1.0 Introduction
5S is a philosophy and a way of organizing and managing the workspace and work
flow with the intent to improve efficiency by eliminating waste, improving flow and
reducing process unreasonable. 5S activities are to create good working environment
through the reduction of “Muri”, “Mura”, and “Muda”. Furthermore, 5S are literally 5
abbreviations of Japanese terms starting with the letter S. They are Seiri, Seiton, Seiso,
Seiketsu, and Sitsuke. So, if you translate those Japanese words into English, you will get
Sort, Set, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain respectively.

2.0 Phases of 5S

Sort (Seiri) : Differentiate between the necessary and unnecessary
and discard the unnecessary. Eliminate all unnecessary tools, parts,
instructions: work-in-process; unnecessary tools; unused machinery;
defective products; papers and documents. Go through all tools,
materials, etc., in the plant and work area. Keep only essential
items. Everything else is stored or discarded.
 Set in Order (Seiton) : There should be a place for everything and
everything should be in its place. The place for each item should be
clearly labeled or demarcated. Items should be arranged in a
