Baker 3 Introduction In this experiment, tetrahedral mimt complexes of Co(II), Co(mimt) 2 (NO 3 ) 2 and Co(mimt) 4 (NO 3 ) 2 ·H 2 O, will be formed. The complex formed is dependent on the amount of limiting reagent , 1,3-dihydro-1- methyl-2H-imidazole-2-thione, also known as mimt. Sulfur and nitrogen heterocyclic compounds such as mimt are examples of species containing ambidentate ligands that can exist in two forms (Figure 1). The thione form is expected as it is most stable at room temperature. The mimt will bond to metals by donation of electrons at the sulfur atom, which can be seen in the IR spectral shift of the C=S bond of the parent to a lower frequency due to electron donation to the metal. Mimt + Cobalt (II) Nitrate Hexahydrate Propsed structure of Co(mimt) 2 (NO 3 ) 2 , Proposed structure of Co(mimt) 4 (NO 3 ) 2 ·H 2 O Materials Required materials and equipment include a magnetic stirring hot plate, two 10 mL Erlenmeyer flasks, one 10 mL round bottom flask, a Keck clip, a magnetic stirring bar, a sand bath, a water condenser, a CaCl 2 drying tube, an ice-water bath, a Hirsch funnel, a Pasteur pipet, and filter paper. Methods Synthesis of Co(mimt) 4 (NO 3 ) 2 ·H 2 O Obtain a 10 mL Erlenmeyer flask. Mix 3.5 mL of absolute ethanol with 190 μL of triethylorthoformate. Prepare a second portion of this solvent. To a 10 mL round bottom flask, add a stir bar, and then dissolve 73 mg of hydrated cobalt(II) nitrate in 2.5 mL of the solvent prepared previously. Dissolve 114 mg of mimt to 1.25 mL of the same solvent prepared previously. Add this to the solution using a Pasteur pipet.
