Lecture Eight—Muhammad and the Founding of Islam Key Questions: 1. 1) How did Muhammad define his message in relation to other religious traditions? 2. 2) How did he consolidate his fledging community of Muslims? (Umma) I) The Challenge of Muhammad’s Message a) The Calling—610 C.E. (age of 40) - He received 1 st revelation i) Annual family retreat on Mount Hira - Tradition for his family & as group - To meditate & alms & pray & time for family to bond - Muhammad as any other man; however, he sensed deep emptiness ii) Call to “recite” by the angel Gabriel -1 st revelation! - Dream / revelation - Important to Judaic tradition too (God talked to Moses…) - Islam culture: God cannot be depicted as human form… so. . angel Gabriel came 1. (1) Gabriel’s “harsh treatment of me” - 1 st instruction given by angel was “recite” ; elements of miracle 2. (2) An unwitting, reluctant messenger of God - 3. (3) Initial doubts - Humanity of Muhammad: not that different from us (part of fear came from the doubt) - Accuse possession of Jins… & Muhammad afraid of that too - personal aversion of visionary -> wanted to kill himself(traumatized by the experience) 4. (4) Crucial role of Khadija in reassuring him - Held his hand and put blanket over him(put blanket = traditionally did it to visionary) - st converts b ) “The Seal of the Prophets” i) Last of the prophets called by God - With these assurance, Muhammad start to understand the nature of revelation - Person in the transe who has the vision - He followed the line of ethical monotheism tradition like Abraham, Moses. . etc whole chain of Jewish prophet & even acknowledged that Jesus as messiah - In Quran, every description of Jesus = Jesus as son of Mary, near station to God (not son of God) - Saw himself as corrected a some necessary prophet to guide Arabs back to the true path - Many Arabs were strayed from the law of Moses & Abraham & Jesus - Reclaims Abraham, Moses, Jesus as Muslim ( Muslim = one who submit to God) - That is why Muhammad was sent as “seal of the prophet”(= the last one / final word of laws of God) ii) Anxiety of belatedness - God send message to Jews (Moses…etc) then to Christians (Jesus) then… lastly to Arabs. Why? - Answer of Muhammad: Yes, God had spoken to us thru law of Moses…etc(earlier . Role they played mislead Arab from the true laws, we didn’t listen! - Iblis = devil; = In the reader, opening of the Quran, in “sura” whole section about who Iblis is and he challenges to god a lot. = Pretty important connection of Old Testament and Christian and Muslim interpretation.
