Tiara Bryant AP Biology Essays 1. Carbon Cycle : Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is absorbed by plants, being transformed into carbohydrates for the plant's metabolism and structure. When plants die decay releases these compounds and the carbon becomes oxidized in the form of carbon dioxide. Should the decay part of the cycle be set aside by burial in quantity/depth the plant matter detiorates into peat or even coal. As the peat/coal re-emerges as fuel or even just exposure to the atmosphere it is oxidized forming CO and/or CO2. Nitrogen cycle : Most plants get the nitrogen they need to grow from the soils or water in which they live. Animals get the nitrogen they need by eating plants or other animals that contain nitrogen. When organisms die, their bodies decompose bringing the nitrogen into soil on land or into ocean water. Bacteria alter the nitrogen into a form that plants are able to use. Other types of bacteria are able to change nitrogen dissolved in waterways into a form that allows it to return to the atmosphere. 2. A) Succession refers to the different "stages" (seres) that an area goes through as it achieves this "climax" community. Once the climax community is established, there is no further succession. Depending on where you live, the climax community may be different: oak-history forest, grassland, and beech-maple forest, are common climax communities in the Midwestern US. It occurs because each successive community changes the environment, making it more easier for more complex, larger plants to move into the area. As the plant populations expand, more and more animal species come into the area, also. It's important because it allows a greater biodiversity in an area. Climate and the physical environment generally influence the rate of succession. B)
