Ion Naming Help Sheet J.P. Harris PCC Transition Metals tend to make 2+ ions, but some can make more than 1 type of ion! Noble Gasses don't tend to make ions! Naming Single Atoms that Become Ions cations (+ charged ions) - keep element name and add ion ex. sodium = Na Na + = sodium ion **Note: Transition metal cations can be tricky!** transition metal cations - usually make 2+ charge, but some can make two or more ions; so we name them like this: Symbol Stock System (New Name) Old System * Fe 2+ iron (II) ion ferrous ion Fe 3+ iron (III) ion ferric ion * I don't expect you to learn the old system! This is FYI (for your information) only! anions (- charged ions) - change ending to -ide (drop -ium, -ine, -ous, -on, -ygen, or -ogen ending, add -ide ending) ex. oxygen = O O 2- = oxide Periodic Table - Ion Formation 1+ 2+ 3+ 4± 3- 2- 1- Polyatomic Ion Names (memorize!) Polyatomic Cations Ammonium ion + 4 NH Polyatomic Anions 1- charge Acetate ion 2 3 CO CH Bicarbonate ion 3 HCO Bisulfate ion
