BIO 244 Dr. Gaillard Spring 2008 Chapter 1 Review Questions 1. What was Robert Hooke’s major contribution to the field of cell biology? He coined/drew the term cell. 2. What is the cell theory? What scientist originally proposed this theory? All living organisms are made of cells. The cell theory states that all cells arise from preexisting cells. Rudolph Virchow proposed the theory (1858) 3. Describe Pasteur’s experiment and how it provided strong evidence that cells only arise from pre-existing cells. 4. Compare and contrast natural selection with artificial selection. Natural selection is the process by which individuals with certain heritable traits tend to produce more surviving offspring than do individuals without those traits, resulting in a change of genetic make-up. Artificial selection is deliberate manipulation by humans, as in animal and plant breeding, of the hereditary traits of a population by allowing only certain individuals to reproduce. 5.
