Quiz Review: Answer the following questions about the chapter. Chapter 5: Cultural and Linguistic Diversity 1. Identify 3 ways in which language diversity may contribute to assessment difficulties with students who are from a variety of cultures 1. Students with limited or no English proficiency may be thought to have speech or language disorders and hence might be referred and tested for special education placement. 2. A child’s native language may appear to be English because of conversational fluency at school, but he or she may not be proficient enough to engage in academic work or assessment in English 3. Because of his or her language differences, a child’s academic or psychological assessment may inaccurately represent his or her ability. 2. Identify 3 ways in which differing sociocultural customs may affect the manner in which parents become involved in the educational process. 1. Parents from cultural backgrounds may view special assistance differently than educational institutions do. 2. Parents from some cultural backgrounds may be reluctant to take an active role in interacting with the educational system 3. Certain behaviors that may suggest a disabling condition that calls for special education assistance are viewed as normal in some cultures; parents from those cultures may not see them as problematic. 3. Identify two ways in which assessment may contribute to the overrepresentation of culturally diverse students in special education programs. 1. Using assessment instruments that are designed and constructed with specific language and content that “favors” the cultural majority 2. Using assessment procedures that are biased, either implicitly or explicitly, against people from culturally different backgrounds.

4. How does migrancy among culturally diverse populations contribute to academic difficulties? In many cases, migrant families are characterized by economic disadvantages and language differences. Children in migrant households may move and change educational placement several times a year, which limits continuity and contributes to inconsistent educational programming. 5. What are 2-3 factors that have contributed to heightened attention regarding the disproportionate placement of minority ethnic and cultural groups in special education? Stigma is attached to special education; special education placement for children from culturally and ethnically diverse groups may not be educationally effective in meeting their academic needs; a self-fulfilling prophecy may occur, resulting in youngsters becoming what they are labeled. Quiz Review: Chapter 6: Families 1) Identify 3 ways in which a newborn child with a disability influences the family social/ecological system. 1. Shock: parents may need assistance, yet most find the least amount of help available 2. Realization: parents may be anxious or fearful about their ability to cope with the demands of caring for a child who has unique needs 3.
