2. Conquerors and colonial empires 2.1 The Spanish colonial empire The first European colonial empire in the Americas was established by the Spanish. A. The Conquistador (Spanish conqueror) Ambitious veterans turned to conquistadors (less than 1000); Conquered the Aztec Empire (central Mexico) in 1519-21; Conquered the Inca (Peru) by 1540; By 1550 the conquest was over. B. The Spanish empire in the Americas Within 100 years after Columbus reached the Americas, the Spanish set up a large colonial empire in the New World. 2.2 The Portuguese colonial empire: Brazil Portuguese interest in Brazil increased in the mid-sixteenth century when profitable sugar plantations were set up along the coast area. 2.3 French and English colonies in North America French settlers established colonies at Port Royal (Nova Scotia) in 1604 and Quebec in 1608; English migrants founded Jamestown in 1607 and the Pilgrims founded Plymouth in 1620. 3.
