Rowland Kyung Hwang History 105g 09/13/2010 Short Writing Assignment One In “ Kim Yusin: Worship of the Three Guardian Spirits ” Samguk Yusa presents a Kim Yusin who was born for greatness and “gifted from birth”(Yusa 1:60). Samguk Yusa’s account takes place during Kim’s young adulthood where Kim is traveling with Paeksok, a fellow hwarang graduate, to spy on rival countries Koguryo and Paekche. While resting, Kim noticed that he had been followed by two girls. As they traveled further a third girl appeared. After sharing food and conversation, the girls convinced Kim to follow them to the forest alone. In the forest Yusa’s account again emphasizes Kim Yusin’s divine favoring as the three girls revealed their spirit form and warned Kim that Paeksok was plotting to kill Kim. When interrogated Paesok confessed that he was a patriot of Koguryo who was ordered to kill Kim Yusin because Yusin was a reincarnation of a “Koguryo diviner” who promised to be “reborn as a general who...
