Unformatted text preview: Lecture 28: Cancer, Vitamin A & C 16/12/2009 16:20:00 ← Cancer • Begins with a normal cell and Pre-carcinogen • Pre-carcinogen gets oxidized o If get into cell, DNA becomes screwed-up ← • Initial Phase o Pre-carcinogen transforms cell into abnormal cell o Normally, healthy immune system normally gets rid of abnormal cell o DNA gets altered • Latent Phase o Nothing is particularly done • Promotion Phase o Stage I Abnormal lump is found Immune system can still destroy it o Stage II Larger lump Overwhelming immune system Meds starve cells of energy o Stage III Abnormal cell escapes to lymph system • Metastasis Phase o Stage IV Abnormal lump in new organ • Nutrition becomes less and less effective as the stages progress ← ← Any hope?? YES!!! ← ← Study -> Half the food given = half the # of tumors ← ← Minimizing the Risk of Cancer • Don’t smoke • Minimize Caloric intake • Maximize intake of fruits and veggies o Vitamin C & A • Increase fiber • Decrease fat, protein • Increase foods with o Lycopene (tomato)- prostate cancer o Beta-Carotene (apricot & carrot) – oral cancer o Cryptoxanthin (orange & yolk)- cervical cancer •...
