Biology 2107.chapter 8 1 Biology 2107 Chapter 8: An Introduction To Metabolism Definition: All the chemical processes of an organism make up its metabolism. These chemical changes involve energy changes. Two types: Catabolic pathways: Downhill reactions, release energy (Cellular Respiration). Anabolic pathways: Uphill reactions, consumes energy (Protein synthesis). Energy of downhill reactions may be used to drive uphill reactions It is called: Energy coupling. Bioenergetics is the study of how organisms manage their energy resources. What is energy? Capacity to do work, or rearrange a collection of matter. Kinetic Energy: Energy of motion. Moving objects perform work by imparting motion to other matter; contraction of leg muscles pushes bicycle pedals. Light and heat are two example of kinetic energy. Potential energy: Energy of position: Chemical energy is an example. What is thermodynamics? Study of the energy transformation that occur in a collection of matter.
