Kyle Yuquimpo BIOLOGY 210: STUDY GUIDE HISTORY OF LIFE ON EARTH Reading : Brooker, Chapter 22 At the end of this unit, you should be able to: Explain the following terms: biological evolution-A change in one or more traits of a species or a group of species across many generations. radioisotope dating- The usage of radioactive isotopes to determine the dating of a particular fossil using the half-life of each isotope or the amount it takes for half an isotope to decay. Fossil- Preserved remains of an organism from the past on earth. Formed when sedimentary rocks replace the shape of the bone structure of an organism due to large amounts of time. continental drift- The shifting of land masses over billions of years. Stromatolites- A structure built by layers of cyanobacteria which use the minerals and carbon dioxide to thrive. Precipitate layers of calcium carbonate lay on top of the mat of the bacteria. Cyanobacteria will continue to grow upward thus creating upward formations. mass extinction-A large number of species that perish due to major environmental changes. The five periods in which mass extinctions occurred are during the Ordovician, Devonian, Permian, Triassic, and Cretaceous period. half-life- the time period that it takes for half a certain radioactive isotope to decay.
