INDEPENDENT RETAILERS – RETAILERS OWNED BY A SINGL PERSON OR PARTERNSHIP  AND NOT OPERATED AS PART OF A LARGER RETAIL INSTITUTION. 3. CHAIN STORES – STORES OWNED AND OPERATED AS A GROUP BY A SINGLE  ORGANIZATION. 4. FRANCHISE – THE RIGHT TO OPERATE A BUSINESS OR TO SELL A PRODUCT. 5. GROSS MARGIN – THE AMOUNT OF MONEY THE RETAILER MAKES AS A PERCENTAGE OF  SALES AFTER THE COST OF GOODS SOLD IS SUBTRACTED. 6. DEPARTMENT STORE – A STORE HOUSING SEVERAL DEPARTMENTS UNDER ONE ROOF. 7. BUYER – A DEPARTMENT HEAD WHO SELECTS THE MERCHANDISE FOR HIS OR HER  DEPARTMENT AND WHO MAY ALSO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROMOTION AND  PERSEONNEL. 8. SPECIALTY STORE – A RETAIL STORE SPECIALZING IN A GIVEN TYPE OF MERCHANDISE. 9. SUPERMARKET – A LARGE, DEPARTMENTALIZED, SELF-SERVICE RETAILER THAT  SPECIALIZES IN FOOD AND NON FOOD ITEMS. 10.
