This assignment is due in class on Thursday October 7th . You may work with others. Please indicate with whom you worked. Please submit all the answers in your own words. Please reference any material that you use. Please type the assignment where possible and draw all structures by hand. Question 1(20) 5 points each part Draw by hand the histidine side chain fully protonated and label any ionisable groups with the appropriate pKa. Histidine rich glycoprotein (HRG) is a plasma protein that contains 13% histidine residues. It is postulated that it is involved in the regulation of blood pH. What property of the histidine side chain is relevant to this? 1 - 2 sentences. HRG binds to heparin sulphate, a negatively charged cell surface polysaccharide. In what pH range would you expect the tightest binding between histidine side chains and the heparin sulphate? Explain your answer in one sentence. Lysine rich proteins will also bind to heparin sulphate.
