Importance of plants? Definition Botany: Comes form the Greek word: botane meaning “plant” derived from the verb boskein: to feed Importance of plants 1- Photosynthesis sustains life on earth: Photosynthesis: The process by which plant and certain other organisms such as algae and photosynthetic bacteria use solar energy to transform CO 2 and H 2 O into sugars. How photosynthesis support life? A- Produces almost all of the world’s oxygen: by breaking down H 2 O. B- Plants are the primary producers in terrestrial food chain, while algae and photosynthetic bacteria are primary producer in aquatic food chains.

Importance of plants? Photosynthetic organisms are autotrophs (auto-feeders). Non photosynthetic organisms are heterotrophs (Greek hetero means “other” and trophs= “feeder”. 2- Many medicines come from plants: ± Tea made from the bark of willow trees can cure headaches: Bark contains salicylic acid. Examples: ± Cinchona bark used by native Americans in the Andes mountains used to cure a variety of fevers: This led to the discovery of quinine for treatment of malaria. ± Plants produce a variety of chemicals called alkaloids:
