Cardio respiratory Exercise cardiovascular system: blood, blood vessels, and heart heart functions: stroke volume, heart rate and cardiac output stroke volume: how much blood is pumped with each contraction (75-80 mL for adult) heart rate avg. is 70-80 beats per minute stroke volume x heart rate = cardiac output (aka how many times the heart beats and how much blood) adult heart pumps 5 quarts a minute blood functions: o transports oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to organs and tissues heat throughout body waste away from tissues o regulation temperature and acid o protection immune cells to fight disease and sickness clots to stop bleeding arteries carry blood away from heart veins carry blood back towards heart Atherosclerosis—fatty substances build up in artery (lead to heart attack or stroke) Respiratory system made of two parts: o Respiratory pump Bones (sternum, ribs, vertebrae) Muscles Diaphragm Abs
