Circle of Willis ( " C i r c l e o f W i l l i s " ) Maggie Skyler Anatomy External Brain #4-The anterior communicating artery is a pathway used by the contralateral internal carotid artery so it can supply blood to both pairs of the anterior and middle cerebral arteries. ( A g u r , D a l l e y , a n d M o o r e 8 8 3 )-The anterior cerebral artery supplies blood to most of the medial and superior surfaces of the brain and the frontal pole. Like the medial cortex and that includes the medial aspects of the motor and sensory strips. They also supply blood to the anterior aspects of the frontal lobes. ( A g u r , D a l l e y , a n d M o o r e 8 8 3 )-The internal carotid arteries supply blood along side of the neck behind the ear into the temporal lobe and enter the subarachnoid space of the meninges. They form the anterior cerebral artery and the middle cerebral artery. The internal carotid artery is connected to the basilar arteries via the circle of Willis which allows blood to pass from one system to another in case a blockage occurs. ( A g u r , D a l l e y , a n d M o o r e 8 8 3 )-The middle cerebral artery supplies blood to the lateral surface of the brain and the temporal pole. They also supply blood to the lateral cortex of each cerebral hemisphere of the brain. They supply blood to the areas of the brain used for speech, language, and swallowing. The left one supplies the Brocas area, Wernickes area, Heschls gyrus, and the angular gyrus. The head and neck areas of the motor and sensory strips in both the left and right hemispheres of the brain get their blood from the middle cerebral arteries....
