CSE 489/589Homework Assignment 1 Due at the end of class on Friday, Oct 01 September 16, 2010 Conventions: bps is bits per second Bps is Bytes per second or 8 bits per second 1 kilo = 10 3 (forget 1024 ) 1 mega = 10 6 1 giga = 10 9 Problem 1. Surf the net or read the textbook find out what the OSI reference model is. Give a very brief description of the OSI reference model (half a page). List two ways in which the OSI model is different than the TCP/IP model. List two ways in which they are the same. Problem 2. Consider a network with just four nodes connected as a square. Thus, there are only four links. Each link can carry up to n circuits simultaneously. Suppose n is an even number. A connection is a path between two different nodes. Suppose the network’s switching mode is circuit switching. At the maximum, how many simultaneous connections can be established? How many length- 2 connections can be established at the same time?

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
