San Gabriel Valley Tribune Trauma drama hits the region Sunday, December 12, 2004 - IF you are shot or in a serious car accident in the East San Gabriel Valley or Whittier, you will be transported 20-plus miles to Los Angeles County- USC Medical Center in South Los Angeles, the nearest trauma center. Pasadena's Huntington Memorial Hospital the most logical selection for rescue personnel won't take trauma patients from this side of the valley because medical professionals in that unit have enough to contend with just ministering to trauma victims from their West Valley service area. That victims from Wednesday's early morning crash, which claimed the lives of three Jet Propulsion Laboratory employees, were transported to Huntington's trauma center undoubtedly played a part in their survival. The untenable situation of having no trauma center for the remainder of the Valley and Whittier area, however, must be righted, and the solution lies with the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Since county voters passed a trauma tax (Measure B) in 2002, the SGV has seen only 1.4 percent
