Artistic Time Travel 2 While there have been many that have traveled the world to see many different forms of art, cultures and civilizations; I had the opportunity to travel through time and study three different civilizations and the forms of art during those particular times. The three different time periods that were visited, were the classical Greek or Hellenistic, Roman and early Japanese civilizations. During my travels of these time periods, the cultures and different forms of art were studied. The forms of art from each individual period will be analyzed based on my firsthand experience. I will talk about how the art was made, purpose of the piece, the meaning of the art and what it may express, if there is a trans-historical link to the artwork etc. The different forms of art would include music, paintings, architecture, or literature. I will also discuss if the art was influenced from earlier civilizations, how the art relates within the civilization and if the art still has meaning or value if not both in modern civilization. Throughout these next three chapters of my book, all of the questions about the three civilizations and their respective forms of art will be answered. One of the first interesting facts that I learned about classical Greek and Hellenistic civilization during my time travel was the influence that the Greek civilization had on the Hellenistic time period. According to Dr. McKay, the Hellenistic civilization came about from the conquests of Alexander the Great. Dr. McKay says that Alexander the Great was a Greek that created one of the largest empires in history and his major conquest that caused the Greek civilization to spread to the east. According to Wikipedia (2009), the Hellenistic civilization is a fusion of the ancient Greek world that ranged from the Middle East to north-east Africa. This particular time period ranged from 323 BC until 146 BC. The piece of artwork from this time period that stands out the most to me is the Winged Victory of Samothrace. This is a statue of a woman with wings that represents and honors a god and a sea battle that took place in this time
