Running Head: ACE BIOLOGY MODULE 3:4 1 Lymphatic and Immune Assignment 1. How many cells in our body are engaged in protection against disease and cancer? One in ten cells. 2. The lymphatic and immune systems work to defend our body against what? (two things) ( 2 marks) a) Disease causing organisms b) Cancerous Cells. 3. The lymphatic and immune systems are based on what type of cells? Specialized white blood cells. 4. What are cancer cells? Cancer cells are our own cells that have damaged DNA within them, and therefore are unable to become healthy functional cells. 5. What is a pathogen? A pathogen is defined as an organism causing disease to its host. 6. What is an antigen? (2 marks) Antigens are substances that cause an immune response in the body by identifying substances in or markers on cells. 7. What is an antibody? Antibodies are proteins that attached to the invading pathogens. 8. What are the two main fluid systems in our body? Blood and lymph fluid systems.

Where does lymph fluid drain into? (2 marks) Lymph fluid drains into a network of lymph capillaries and then into larger vessels known as lymphatics. 11. Lymphatics are studded with what? Lymph nodes. 12. What do lymph nodes contain? Give the two names. (2 marks) Lymphocytes and macrophages. 13. What is the function of the specialized cells in the lymph nodes?
