1 9/24/10 1. Introduction to energy transformation 2. Biology follows laws of thermodynamics 3. What is the ‘secret of life’? Exam 1 multiple-choice scores (of 50 possible) are posted on eGradebook; written pages not yet ready. • Energy flows through organisms, changing between potential and kinetic forms, with some loss of useful energy at each conversion. • Sunlight (kinetic) is converted to sugars (potential) in photosynthesis. • In cellular respiration cells convert energy in organic fuels (reduced carbon compounds) to ATP energy for doing cell work. Energy is the capacity to cause change. Free energy - energy available to do work. The laws of energy transformation: •First law of thermodynamics Energy of the universe is constant, but energy constantly changes forms. •Second law of thermodynamics Every energy transformation increases the entropy of the system. [entropy - disorder, randomness] Free energy changes: gravitational motion, diffusion, chemical reaction (modified from Fig.8.5)
