The system unit is the main body of a computer , containing a motherboard o Motherboard is a circuit board, helps components interact with one another o Other circuit boards are logical and economical ways to replace what would be loose wiring A microcomputer’s speed is measured by its clock rate which is the cycles per second that a computer can perform its most basic tasks , measured in gigahertz RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) which are chips designed for efficiency, 64-bit processors, can only views 1’s and 0’s o 8 bits = 1 byte 256 combnations of bits in a byte Represent things we know, numbers, letters, commas, etc Bus lines are controlled by software that enables the use of peripherals o PCI and AGP are old-school o USB and Firewire win Two-state system on a computer is called a binary system Term Size Roughly Byte 8 bits One character Kilobyte 1,024 bits 1,000 bytes Megabyte 1,024 kilobytes 1,000 kilobytes Gigabyte 1,024 megabytes 1,000 megabytes Terabyte 1,024 gigabytes 1,000 gigabytes Most computers use the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII)
