8/26/10 Chapter 1 I) Geography- the study of the special variation of how and why things differ from place on the surface of the Earth II) We study natural phenomenon as well as human creations and we are guided by our special perspective III) Human geography: the study of how people make the world into our home 1) Its about how we change an abstract space into a place that has meaning and purpose to us, we leave cultural imprints, we then spread these imprints A) We interact with physical environment B) Cultural landscaper: physical/material expression that are unique everywhere that describes the culture (1) Work to unify or divide (a) depends on who you are, where you’re from, and what you’re looking at IV)Geography is a social science, a physical science, and a humanity 1) Links geology, biology, and botany with anthropology, history, and ecology V) The reason people look at/learn about other cultures: 1) Curiosity (what’s over there?) A) Curiosity about science 2) Economic & political A) Colonial 3) Religions
