Martin 1 Chandler Martin DE American History Mr. Lloyd 30 January 2015 Causes of the American Civil War In 1787, the Three Fifth Compromise was in effect. This Compromise said that each slave was worth three fifths of a person when it came to voting. The Three Fifth Compromise led to an increasing in sectionalism. In 1793, the cotton gin, which was a device that gathered the seeds out of cotton fifty times faster than by hand, was invented. This invention was thought to take the place of slaves, but rather, it increased the demand of slaves all the more. The territory of Louisiana was bought in 1803. This purchase caused the American people to move out west and investigate the land. This was known has Westward Expansion. As Americans pushed west, the issue of slavery came to the forefront. The big question was would the new territories of America become slave or free? In 1820, the Missouri Compromise was formed. The first confrontation over slavery in the west caused the compromise to come about. Missouri applied to become a slave state, but in doing this, it would upset the balance of power in the senate. So, it was suggested that Missouri enter in as a slave state and Maine as a free state to keep the balance of power. This compromise cooled sectional differences for a short time.
