Addams wasa major leader in women's suffrage and in local peace. She was a pacifist and wanted nothing butpeace and stability. She also wanted to help the poor community of Chicago. She would do thisby building a settlement house. She would need help from outside sources and would find herinspiration in books and from key places around the globe.After taking notice of the poor conditions of the people in the Chicago area were living inand the education that they were not receiving, Addams wanted to do something to help them outin great measures. She got inspiration from books like Tolstoy's book My Religion. Thisinfluenced her to be baptized as a Christian in the Cedarville, Presbyterian Church, in thesummer of 1886. Another book that greatly influenced her was Giuseppe Mazzini's Duties ofMan, which inspired her with the idea of democracy as a social ideal. In the summer of 1887,
