Martin 1 Chandler Martin Mrs. Martin English Comp 1 2 December 2015 The Amazing Beowulf If someone were to think of a hero, one would think of someone that can do greater things than normal people. A hero would also look like they could do more than other people. Now an epic hero is even greater than a regular hero. “An epic hero is a brave and noble character in an epic poem and is admired for great achievements or affected by grand events” (“epic hero”). In an Anglo-Saxon poem, a character by the name of Beowulf is considered as an epic hero with many different abilities and different characteristics that make him who he is. In the land of Beowulf, all of the people knew of his greatness and how strong he was in battle. The events that Beowulf went through shaped the way he was and how people saw him. Everyone admired Beowulf for everything he stood for and everything that he demonstrated in his life. In Anglo-Saxon culture, epic heroes like Beowulf, would be highly favored and loved throughout the land. Everyone would be happy to know that an epic hero was around because an epic hero is such a great person, and there are not many other people like this in the world. To be considered an epic hero in Anglo-Saxon society, one must have many different characteristics and have many different abilities that others do not possess. An epic hero in Anglo-Saxon society, like Beowulf, would be a strong and responsible leader, would risk his own life for his people, and would have superior strength and courage. Beowulf is a mighty epic hero that demonstrates strong and responsible leadership skills. In Anglo-Saxon culture and literature, to be a hero was to be a warrior. Beowulf would lead a
Martin 2 great army of powerful warriors into many different battles. It is very important for a leader to be strong and to have authority in his words. With many powerful warriors under his watch, Beowulf will be able to control them with his strong responsibility.
