BIB 123 – New Testament History Danett Bourgolly New Testament History Background Module 1 Page 3 New Testament History Background For all intents and purposes, this essay will present an evaluation of the significance of the work of Ezra and Herod the Great. There will be an attempt to identify any significant contributions made to the life of the intertestamental Jewish community and any impact that these contributions had on the Jewish people during the time of Jesus and the church. In chapter 3 of the textbook, New Testament History, Niswonger states; “The main contingent of returnees from exile left Babylon in 538—537 B.C. Cyrus the Persian, who had defeated the Babylonians only a few years earlier, now encouraged the Jews to rebuild the temple. A group of over 42,000 returned under the leadership of Zerubbabel, a prince of the royal line of Judah. The former exiles rebuilt the altar and reinstituted the sacrifices. They laid the temple foundation at the outset of their second year, but opposition from surrounding peoples interrupted the project. In 520 B.C. Haggai and Zechariah stirred the people to resume the work
