I always interpreted this song slightly different than what mostly everyone  posted. you would not believe your eyes if ten million fireflies lit up the world as i fell asleep" -In this part he's talking to the listener. Lets make believe that the singer is our  friend and he's telling us how we would react when ten million fireflies lit up the  world as HE fell asleep. Obviously, the singer missed out on the opportunity to  see the fireflies. "'Cause they'd fill the open air  and leave teardrops everywhere you'd think me rude but I'd just stand and stare" -The second half of the first tells us that if he were awake,  he'd stare at them all  night as it was something rude to see something so majestic, yet natural that  occurs everyday. He feels as if his friend doesn't appreciate everything and just  stares at things dumbfounded and walks away. "I'd like to make myself believe that planet Earth turns slowly Its hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep 'Cause everything is never as it seems" -Now the chorus is a bit different. I actually interpreted this as he wishes there  was more time in a day, that way he can sleep but still enjoy the night and it's  mysteries-the fireflies. It's just difficult for him to stay awake because eventually  fatigue hits him and it just so happens that when he falls asleep, unnatural things  occur in real life. "'Cause id get a thousand hugs from ten thousand lightning bugs as they tried to teach me how to dance A foxtrot above my head

a sockhop beneath my bed a disco ball is just hanging by a thread" -Here he's just telling us what he would do with all these fireflies. He'd hope they  would interact with him. "When i fall asleep leave my door open just a crack (please take me away from here) 'Cause i feel like such an insomniac (please take me away from here) why do i tire of counting sheep (please take me away from here) when I'm far too tired to fall asleep" -This one contradicts those who think he wants to keep dreaming. A lot of people  can't sleep with the door open.. Insomniac means that you can't sleep..  and he's  tired of counting sheep when he's "too tired to fall asleep" which is just a  paradox. Sometimes he counts sheep, and it works as it makes him sleepy, but  he's tired of falling asleep. "To ten million fireflies I'm weird 'cause i hate goodbyes i got misty eyes as they said farewell but ill know where several are if my dreams get real bizarre 'cause i saved a few and i keep them in a jar" - The singer enjoys some time with actual fireflies before he has to go to sleep.  Fortunately for him he takes a few and keeps them. He doesn't want to dream,

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
