Genre 21:00 Genre- a distinct type of category into a great number of individual works in a  specific art form or medium  Setting Characters Mood Conflicts Atmosphere Subject Themes World view Type of actors Type of sounds/music -All these elements go into a genre, they have similar this enables us to lump films into categories content- what goes into a movie  character  plot setting mood, etc…

form- how the content is presented, how it is shaped/formed visual design temporal design literary design sound design acting styles 3 aspects/criteria of Genre which enable us to define genres: myth- story around myths  conventions- ways of doing things o for ex.- musicals use song and dance, gangster films use specific lingos iconography-  series of images and sounds that are apparent in a series of  films 3 Genres: (all genres are aesthetically neutral) tragedy- about man going beyond the bonds o image of man being heroic o not contemporary o a theological genre, it implies a religious foundation o doesn’t function today as we are in a secular age o emotional and intelligent comedy o image of man constrained in the bonds

o plot and character are very stylized in order to keep outside of them to see  the point o many subcategories melodrama o deals with typical lives, typical situations, typical actions o familiar, easily recognizable o everyday concerns for ex. conflict in romance o melodramas with a surname (family drama, etc…)- deal with passion o others deal with action rather than passion (westerns, adventures, etc…) o melodramas have an emphasis on emotion o heighten conventions to make us feel what the characters feel Genres originated from all different arts (literature, art, etc..) Soon they came together and formed the 3 melodramas Genres enables producers to advertise Genre helps audience- gives them assurance. “get what you ask for” Reduces costs as sets can be reused, props, etc… Filmmakers coat a film’s true meaning by hiding it in a genre o Ex.) suspense film really being about transgender sexual issues, Funny  People Genre films are a cultural myth o Because you can recognize common storylines, iconography, sights and  sounds, a large variety of works are grouped together, all of a certain  genre that attract viewers
