CTCS 190 8/25/10 Aesthetics o The things that connect you with a movie What turns you on about the movie o The study of qualities that make us feel what we see Film was born from the creativity of the 19 th century o The science of the recreation of life in motion was the idea that started film 6 things had to be in place for film to be created o Persistence of vision Phenomena of the mind and brain where you see an image and it sticks on your retina for a split second while you see another image and you mind perceives movement between the 2 Thouma-tropa A greek toy that used persistence of vision but putting an image on 2 sides of a coin and spinning it quick so they looked like they were interacting o Still photography o Motion picture camera The first one came when 24 camera were connected together to take pictures in a row Next they wanted 1 camera to be able to take many pics per second A gun was created that took 12 pics a second It made a little motion but not much o Film stock Celluloid that allowed thousands of pictured to be taken per second Now standards have 24 still pictures per second

Once started, film became big business right away. o Movies met the needs of the lower class o Made few demands on the language barrier so it was popular with immigrants o Important in acclimating immigrants in American culture o Very accessible Clean Can bring the whole family o As they grew in popular, stories were integrated The Great Train Robbery (1903) o Popularity came partially because of the communal experience o Also grew popular because it was a dream life Movies are dreaming An escape Another life We give our conscious level a rest The definition of dreaming o The 3 contributers in movies Producer Puts up the money for a movie to be made Distributer Gets movies out to theaters around the world Exhibitor Rents movies from distributer to show o Vaudsville A group of skits that have little to no connection

Has an 8-12 skits followed by an intermission and then 6-8 more The worst spot to be shown in is the right before the end of the first act b/c people would be waiting for intermission o Nickelodeon The first place made solely for showing movies In 1905 o In 1914 they started making opera house style theaters To draw upper and middle classes more Movies as an art form o The word entertainment comes from the latin teno, tenere Means to hold o Movies are the 7 arts wrapped into 1 Movies as a cultural product o It can speak about culture in a million and a half ways in one o Past peoples have left symbols of their culture Great wall of china Taj mahal Shakespeare’s writings Ours are movies 9/1/10 Script o Aka screenplay o That which gets the deal started o Different from an adaptation Where is written from a source such as a novel, play, tv show, album
