Cinema Lecture – Week 10 22:04 MODERNISM: The Hours – Modern film European film Explosion of genre   Modernist period How did cinema change with time? o Similar to how music, drama, art changed with time. Something must have  happened. What happened? Modernism happened. Modernism not only had an impact on cinema, but also on art, music, drama. Modernism was squelched.  With World War II, Neo-realism was evolved in the arts. Neo-realism helped create an explosion of genre. Tenants of Modernism: 1. Content 2. Form Modernism is a piece of work that self-consciously questions social and moral  values. A modernist film is introspective in terms of social and moral values.  Modernist films are very upfront about social and moral values. Question its norms. Journey – self awareness and understanding while looking at social and  moral values. Work in a modernist world are not homogeneous. They are heterogeneous.  Trust is very relative. Morality in modernism is modernist and not traditional.
