HIST 2023   Fall 2006   Dr. Martin Alfred Dreyfus Who: Jewish French Military Officer What: Was falsely convicted of treason, which began the Dreyfus Affair. People thought he was only being  treated badly because he was  Jew. People began to say that if Jews couldn’t get good treatment in France  they couldn’t get it anywhere. When: 1894 Where: France then sentenced to French Guiana Why:  Split France and made the world care about the plight of the Jews Abdel-Nasser Who:  President of Egypt, founder of the PLO What:  Started the Suez Crisis in 1956 which was owned by the English. He began to provide weapons for  revolutionist in Nigeria who were fighting the French. The French Prime Minster Molet and the British Prime  Minster Eden met secretly to handle this. Israelis troops entered the Sienna and the British and French  dropped troops in October 1956 to overthrow Nasser without damaging the canal. This was called the Suez  Affair. The USSR saw a way to help a 3 rd  world country and to hurt Western ones so they sent messages to  England and France saying they had to stop or he would start a war so they left and Nasser remained in  power. He invaded Israel in 1967 for the Six Day War, which he lost. Israel made the first move and destroyed  all of Egypt’s Syria’s and Jordan’s armed forces then destroyed the Egyptian army. When:  1954-1970 Where:  Egypt, Israel, and the Sinai Peninsula  Why:  Advance Arab nationalism  Palestine Liberation Organization Who:  Led by Yasser Arafat What:  Attacked Israel and participated in the Six Day War When:  Founded 1964 Where:  Palestine/Israel Why:  Participated in Resolution 242 to make peace with Israel, fighting for own state against Israel Suez Canal Who:  Israel, UK, France, Egypt What:  Israel crossed the Sinai and took the canal backed by France and the UK When:  1956 Where:  Egypt Why:  Major failure by US to support UK and France, failed to stop guerilla attacks in to Israel, Egypt  nationalized the canal Menachem Begin Who:  Prime Minister of Israel

What:  The British wanted to kill him and Sadat. He invited Sadat to Israel then they negotiated Camp David  Accords in 1978. Israel gave back Sinai and Egypt recognized Israel as a nation an Israel had to tryst them. In  1982 he invaded Lebanon to crush the Gorilla fighting. His 5 th  war.  He didn’t win and resigned.
