Brownfield sites are abandoned or underused industrial or commercial properties in built up urban areas which are environmentally contaminated, and is often considered as a potential site for redevelopment. [ Houghton Mifflin Company , 2005] There are currently, “About 30,000 brownfield’s mar the Canadian landscape.”[OCETA, 2009 ] Brownfield sites make a huge impact on both the economy and the environment, since the site is abandoned, it does not impact the environment and economy in any positive ways but it has a negative impact on the economy since there is an empty piece of land just lying there. However, if the sites were to be filled with a building or houses, it would have a huge positive impact. Currently in Hamilton, there is a program, “ Hamilton's Environmental Remediation and Site Enhancement (ERASE) ”[ Hamilton Economic Development, 2007], which is slowly redeveloping the brownfield sites located in various areas around the city.
