The wire went through three forms of reactions; oxidation reduction reactions, metathesis and dehydration. The amount of recovered copper form all three reactions is 276.2%. Introduction Copper wire starts out in its solid form. It’s the affects of the reactions that break the components up into its Cu+2 ions and restructures the ions to form another form of solid. An oxidation-reduction reaction is the process of transferring electrons. Oxidation is the loss of the electron, while reduction is the gaining of the electron. However its only the oxidation state that is being transferred. Cu (s) + 4HNO3 (aq) → Cu(NO3)2 (aq) + 2NO2 (g) + 2H2O (l) Metathesis is a molecular process also called double replacement involving the exchange of bonds between the two reacting chemical species. When the reactants in the reaction are ionic compounds in solution, cations and anions of the compounds are the parts exchanged. The overall reaction result in the creation of products with similar or identical bonding affiliations. . Cu (NO3)2 (aq) + 2NaOH (aq) →Cu(OH)2 (s) + 2NaNO3 (aq) Dehydration is a reaction that removes water form an reaction. Cu(OH)2 (s) → CuO (s) + H2O (g)
