How to Create an Oracle Database in Linux By Kristen Leigh Grubb , eHow Contributor Oracle Database is a relational database management system (RDMS) available for the Windows, Linux and Unix operating systems. It is a commercial product, with Enterprise, Standard and Express editions. The Express Edition is free to download and use, while the other editions must be purchased from Oracle. The database is installed on the Linux operating system through a graphical installer that is started from the command line. Database management is performed through a Web-based management console. Difficulty: Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need: Oracle installation media 1. 1 Open a terminal window. The terminal window will be found in the operating system's main "Application" menu, under either "System Tools" or "Utilities." You will be presented with a command prompt. 2. 2 Type the command "su" to log in as the root user. 3. 3 Type the command "/usr/sbin/groupadd oinstall" to create the oinstall group. 4. 4 Type the command "/usr/sbin/groupadd dba" to create the DBA group. 5. 5 Type the command "/usr/sbin/useradd -g oinstall -G dba oracle" to create the Oracle user. 6. 6 Type the command "passwd oracle" to create the Oracle password. 7. 7 Type the command "mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle /u02/oradata" to create the directories where the Oracle database and the Oracle data will reside. 8. 8 Type the following commands to change the owner of the two directories you just created: chmod -R 775 /u01/app/oracle chmod -R 775 /u02/oradata 9. 9
