EASC Discussion Section 20:02 (Mis)perceptions of East Asia in popular culture     CBS program “Misunderstanding China” What images/stereotypes about East Asian countries are presented in popular  culture? Chinese mystics Evil sorcerers Magic Torture (Chinese torture, etc.) Who are the intended audience? American people o China had been closed economy, but Nixon was heading over o American people looked at as saviors in the popular culture What effects do these stereotypes might achieve? On a basic level, the presentation of the stereotypes increases the knowledge  of them and perhaps the common use of them However, at the end of the movie, they showed that the stereotypes are  stereotypes for a reason, and are not necessarily true The Simpsons: “Goo Goo Gai Pan” Stereotypes o Tiananmen square  Audience o American people, because making fun of Asians is a common hobby
