Chapter 1 Outline Social Psychology – the scientific study of how we think about, feel, and behave towards others and how our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influence and are influenced by the other people in our lives. = social psychology is both about the self and others = individual level of analysis discusses the biological characteristics of human beings that determine our social actions and interactions. = interpersonal level of analysis is the study of how people relate to others in their social world. = group level of analysis is the discussion on social groups (collections of individuals who are perceived to have something in common with each other) and cultures (groups of people who have a geographic heritage in common and who share religious and family values and other moral beliefs). = empirical - based on the collection and analysis of data (social psychologists believe that the study of social behavior should be based upon this). Person – Situation Interaction - The person represents the individual human being, all the people around us that we interact with every day and the social groups we are involved in can be the social situation - Lewin’s equation indicates that the behavior of a given person at any given time is a function of
