Windows Utilities Lab #4C (Disks) Part 1 Procedures (Disk Maintenance Utilities) 1. Preliminary Procedures: Startup Windows. 2. ScanDisk: a. Start the ScanDisk utility: Open up My Computer or Windows Explorer and right-click on the C: drive (which is the disk you wish to scan). Select Properties from the context-sensitive menu, select the Tools tab in the displayed dialog, then select the Check Now . . . button in the Error-Checking section at the top of the dialog, and the ScanDisk dialog will be opened. b. ScanDisk Settings: Select the Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors options. c. Run ScanDisk: Select Start to run the utility. 3. Disk Cleanup: a. Start the Disk Cleanup utility: Open up My Computer or Windows Explorer and right-click on the C: drive (which is the disk you wish to scan). Select Properties from the context-sensitive menu, and select the Disk Cleanup . . . button in the displayed dialog. The Disk Cleanup progress dialog will be opened and the system will begin calculating the different options that you can select. Be patient, this may take several minutes on some systems. b. Make Disk Cleanup Selections: When the Disk Cleanup options dialog is finally displayed, select any option that can free up any disk space. Show your instructor your selections before you proceed to the next step. c. Run Disk Cleanup: When your instructor approves your selections , select OK to run the utility. 4. Disk Defragmenter: a. Start the Disk Defragmenter utility: Open up My Computer or Windows Explorer and right-click on the C: drive (which is the disk you wish to scan).
