Nokyeong Kim Tuesday, 3/03/2009 SOCI 200 Lecture Notes Exploring the color lines I: Race in America Race as a social category race is a social concept due to acclaiming to geographical differences not necessarily biological category according to genetics ethnicity social groups with a shared history, sense of identity, geography and cultural roots which may occur despite racial difference Race linked to class position before 1930: divisions initially between immigrants vs. “white founders” Immigrants were characterized based on a “visual economy” – skin color, head size and shape, and other physical characteristics. These stereotypes translated to class structure – became assessments that had economic consequences. Eugenics Race was later rejoined with Nation – as in the Nazi regime. eugenics : getting rid of “undesirable” traits or “useless races” through selective breeding programs Eugenics movement was warmly embraced in America, where officials and politicians
