Unformatted text preview: The Dark Side of Families: Domestic Violence 04/02/09 Violence is a problem that touches many of our lives.-Currently, 6 million women are battered each year by their husbands or partners Approximately 1.5 million women are raped or physically assaulted by an intimate partner each year in the US A women is beaten every 15 seconds in this country Between 22% and 35% of women who go to the emergency rooms are there for injuries related to ongoing partner abuse 40,000 women a year are killed by their spouses or boyfriends Intimate violence is primarily a crime against women—in 1998, females were the victims in 72% of intimate murders Women are the victims of about 85% of non-lethal intimate violence. 1,309,061 women are physically assaulted more than three times each year. This translated into almost 4.5 million beatings annually. The National Violence Against Women Survey found that women who were assaulted averaged seven physical assaults by the same partner. In 2000, there were approximately 60,000 domestic violence calls to law enforcement in LA county....
