SOCI 200m 4.16.09 Bodies and Self Image 1. Body Image a. Involves our perception, imagination, emotions, and physical sensations of and about our bodies 2. Emphasis – moved from “good works” to “good looks” from girls in 1800s to now a. Good works – ie the character or inner qualities 3. Media images of what is beautiful a. In the US aprox. 10% of girls and women (up to 10 mil) are suffering from diagnosed eating disorders i. Of these at least 50K will die as a direct result 4. Images in advertising a. Average woman sees 400-600 ads per day b. By the time she’s 17 she has received over 250,000 commercial messages through the media c. 50% of commercials aimed at girls spoke about physical attractiveness, while none of the commercials aimed at boys referred to appearance d. women’s magazines have 10.5x more ads and articles promoting weight loss than men’s mags e. over ¾ of the covers of women’s mags include at least 1 msg about how to change a women’s bodily appearance – by diet, exercise, or cosmetic surgery 5.
